Janet’s passion for writing began as a child when she wrote to overcome her shyness. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Omaha’s College of St. Mary in 1995 after returning to school as a nontraditional student. She is a former journalist and language arts teacher.Her short story, “The Silver Lining,” placed tenth in the 2010 Writer’s Digest Competition in the Mainstream/literary Short Story category. Janet is the daughter of late Nebraska State Senator George Syas. He served in the Unicameral for 26 years and became dean of the legislature. She and her husband, Paul Nitsick, a former postal employee, live in Nebraska. She has four sons, with two of them being autistic, and has six grandchildren.
