How to (Potentially) Notify Customers of Book Changes UPDATED

You’ve edited your book and reuploaded it. Maybe there were a lot of typos, maybe you had some bad reviews, maybe it just needed a touch up. No matter the reason, the new version is sitting on Amazon’s servers, all shiny and new, and you wish you could let the people who’ve bought it know. After all, if they bought the old version and haven’t read it yet, when they finally get to it and leave their review, their criticisms may not even apply. Or it could be a nice “hey remember you downloaded me? You might want to read me now,” reminder to people who got your book in a flurry of free day promotions.

If Amazon judges the changes to be significant enough they may actually notify all your customers for you. But first you have to send them an email and let them know you want it done.

I used the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of my KDP dashboard page, and choose the “topic” of “Making Corrections”. Is this necessary?  I have no idea. Then I wrote something like this:

Please fill in the following information:
ASIN or name of book: Shades of Gray / B002RHP5D6

I recently uploaded a second edition of Shades of Gray. Changes include rewriting multiple scenes, correcting information, changing conversations, for instance to better explain character’s motives, to explain how Katelina was able to recover after the fight at Claudius’ etc., and removing roughly 2,000 words (after all the additions). I would appreciate if you could make the new version available to past customers if possible.


As I mentioned, the changes must be considered “significant” for them to notify customers, so you want to list them out. Obviously you don’t want to  lie just to make it seem like a huge change so that people will get the notice, but you do want it to seem like they should be notified.

In a day or so you’ll get a reply like this:


We received your request to provide updated content to customers who purchased your book. Thanks for providing specific details about the changes made. We’ll perform a review of the changes to determine the most appropriate way to describe the updates to your customers. This review will complete within four weeks, and the possible results of our review are listed below.

1. If the changes made to your content are considered critical, we’ll send an email to all customers who own the book to notify them of the update and improvements made. These customers will be able to choose to opt in to receive the update through the Manage Your Kindle page on

2. If the changes made to your content are considered minor, we won’t be able to notify all customers by email, but we will activate their ability to update the content through the Manage Your Kindle page on

3. If the changes made to your content have caused unexpected critical issues with the book content, we’ll temporarily remove your book from sale. We’ll notify you of any issues found so you can fix them. Once the improvements are made, just let us know and we’ll then email customers as in case 1.

And then you wait.  I honestly don’t know how significant your changes need to be for an email notice; I’ve never received one for any of the books on my kindle, however, I do know what it looks like to customers when there is simply an update available (aka the minor changes)

Find the book in your Kindle Library, click on the “Update Available” link next to the book’s title, and then follow the update prompts. All your devices that have the eBook currently downloaded will be updated automatically the next time they connect to wireless.

    This is awesome, a month ago I made huge changes and just let it go, only mentioning it on the books description. Of course, if folks already have it, they’ll not have revisited the books page to see it. I’m now getting an editor to look again (I’m slightly obsessed), so that once it’s all done, I’ll now know what to do. Thanks so much. 🙂 This is bookmarked.

    I only made some minor corrections…a few typos. I’m sure Amazon would consider that insignificant.

    Something humorous…one reviewer made some remark about “typos on every page”. There were maybe 4 or 5 in the whole book. That just goes to show, some people will slam you no matter what. So I didn’t think it would matter if I even mentioned the changes. LOL

      LOL! Yep, I know what you mean. I have a short on Amazon on perma-free and the description says “This is Not a novel” – so the number one complaint? “Hey! This is not a novel!” Um… yeah, I said that, LOL!

    I did. They came back with a problem. They said there was an alignment issue. I can’t find it. The same file was accepted by Smashwords and even made it into their premium catalog in spite of Apple’s strict requirements.

    How does one fix a problem if they can’t find it?

      Hmmmm. I shudder to say this, but you might try to copy/paste it out int a new document either using the “past text only” option or else pasting it into notepad first to remove all the formatting. I am current;y fighting with B&N over “split chapters”, which they have not been very helpful in explaining what that even means…

    Hi Joleene. I did this. I made changes to my first book which is perma-free. I told Amazon that I corrected a couple of typos (really, there were only two), and made some changes to pare down clothing descriptions. I indicated I made the changes based on some of the comments by reviewers. I asked if they would simply make the update available to those who had already downloaded the book. I was pleasantly surprised when they sent out an email blast to all 35,000+ people who had downloaded. The reason they noted in the email:

    The updated version contains the following changes:
    • Typos have been corrected.
    • Significant editorial changes have been made.

    It was definitely worth asking for the review. I publish through Smashwords for all other outlets, and the book was updated for future downloads, but I didn’t know of any way for updates to be made for previously downloaded books.

      Yeah, I can’t find a way to notify smashwords/retailers through smashwords customer either, unless an author is lucky enough to have collected them on an email list, etc. I suppose it would probably be a mess since they sell through other retailers…

    I always wondered how that worked. I have gotten a couple of those emails letting me know there were updates, but on others, I only saw the update thing in the dashboard for my Kindle device. I wasn’t aware that I could update from my Kindle. That’s pretty neat. I heard (but am not sure) that B&N sent new versions of the book to the Nooks. I don’t know if that is true though. I should check it out since I have a Nook. I rarely use it because I like the Kindle better (sad to say).
